Take A Look
Spend a minute viewing this image. What do you see?
There's a subject (the cloud) and some colors (blues, greens, yellows). There's also light that gives the image a feeling of depth. Keep looking long enough and you might notice something else...
This is something that's present in everything we see, yet it is rarely acknowledged. Can you guess what it is? It’s our personal experience and imagination.
Take A Look, Again
When I view this image, I always see something different! Sometimes I see sperm whales and blue herons. Other times I see my favorite item at Taco Bell! It really depends on what’s physically there but also what I, myself, bring to the scene.
Take another look at the image. Do you see what I see?!
Takeaway
Using my camera as a tool, I aim to combine images with insight, inviting others to use their imaginations and look through my lens. I think this is what makes visual storytelling such a powerful tool! It can expose people to new issues, opportunities, and viewpoints. Imagery can even move people to act-- whether that’s by doing something big (e.g establishing a new nature preserve) or small, such as bringing me dinner. 🌮😅
Next time you pursue photography or even peruse memes online, take a minute to reflect:
What new viewpoint is this image trying to share?
What personal feelings or memories does this image bring up?
What about this image sparks your curiosity and makes you want to learn or do more?
By spending a bit of time reflecting, we can appreciate media more and come away feeling productive and inspired! Now I'm off to Taco Bell...See ya l8tr.
